Michael Ball

Britain's leading musical star, Michael Ball, plays at the Summer Pops on Saturday 19th July.

Michael will be performing a very special ‘musicals spectacular' show, especially for the Liverpool audience. He will be performing songs from his record-breaking musical, ' Hairspray', as well as hit numbers taken from some of the world's bestloved musicals.

Having starred on Broadway and dominated many leading West End shows for over twenty years, Michael is a dynamic and charismatic performer. He has won critical acclaim and the hearts of the public with his numerous performances on stage, film and television. Michael's solo albums have all held commanding positions in the UK charts, all rapidly going gold within weeks of their release.

This week he picked up an Olivier Award for the West End production of the musical ‘Hairspray', which received a record-breaking 11 Olivier nominations. ‘Hairspray', the high-spirited show based on John Waters' 1988 cult film, won 4 awards, including Best Actor in a ‘Musical for Michael'.

Best known for the song ‘Love Changes Everything' and musical theatre roles, such as, Marius, in ‘Les Misérables', Alex in ‘Aspects of Love', Caractacus Potts in ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' and, not forgetting, Edna Turnblad in ‘Hairspray'.

Michael last performed in Liverpool back in December at The Royal Variety Performance, appearing in drag as the character, Edna Turnblad, as part of the Hairspray cast: "I can't wait to be back in Liverpool this summer...without the dress and high heels this time!" said Michael.

In 1992 Michael represented Great Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest. His entry ‘One Step Out of Time', reached a worldwide audience of over 600 million and topped the UK singles chart. His debut album, ‘Michael Ball', swiftly followed suit. His success as a solo artist led to a sell out national tour, concluding at the London Palladium and performances in front of HM, The Queen, at both Her Majesty's 40th Anniversary Gala and The Royal Variety Show.
