Deacon Blue
Deacon Blue are the latest act to sign up for this summer extravaganza, alongside confirmed artists Michael Bublé and Crowded House. Following on from last year's sell out Pops show, Deacon Blue will perform on Friday 11th July.
Their third consecutive Pops show underlines the affinity the band has with this City and their Scouse fans. "We're really looking forward to being back in Liverpool, especially in the Capital of Culture year, " says singer-songwriter, Ricky Ross, "I'm sure the accolade will do a lot of good for the City, especially as we saw how Glasgow changed since it was awarded the honour back in 1990."
In 2008, Deacon Blue are still in popular demand, playing live shows throughout the UK. At their height of fame, they were one of the most commercially successful British bands of the time, with 18 UK Top 40 hit singles and 5 Top 5 UK albums, 2 of which were No 1 albums. Deacon Blue first stormed the charts back in 1988 with the single, ‘Dignity.' Other hits include ‘Real Gone Kid" and "Chocolate Girl", whilst their 2005 "Singles" album hit the Top 20.
With their name inspired from a Steely Dan track, their music is influenced by the integrity of Bruce Springsteen, channeled through a Scottish upbringing. They may be serious about creating timeless songs, but are never afraid to have fun with the live experience, challenging the strength of the world's concert hall floors for "bounce-ability".
Like many artists of quality, the success did not come overnight. A commitment to live performance built a solid fan base and, despite the fact that the first release of "Raintown" was met with critical rather than commercial success, a re-release following extensive touring meant the album spent 77 weeks on the UK chart. "Raintown" was the first of 5 top five albums, with ‘Dignity', the first of 18 top 40 singles.
